What is done

The area of the project that I worked on the most is the meta data for the top eight polluters from the planet hazard data. What I did was create an excel spread sheet for each of the companies that included its location and contact information. Then I divided the information into either hazardous or non hazardous pollutants based on a scorecard rating between 1-12 and if it was categorized hazardous if it made it on the top 10% hazardous pollutants. Then I made two graphs for each location that showed the pollutant and scorecard rating for the most hazardous or non hazardous. The other task I am working still is taking the EPA data and doing the same thing.

Our back ground information came from the EPA’s The Facility Registry System (FRS) is a centrally managed database that identifies facilities, sites or places subject to environmental regulations or of environmental interest. FRS creates high-quality, accurate, and authoritative facility identification records through rigorous verification and management procedures that incorporate information from program national systems, state master facility records, data collected from EPA’s Central Data Exchange registrations and data management personnel. The FRS provides Internet access to a single integrated source of comprehensive (air, water, and waste) environmental information about facilities, sites or places.

The Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) is a publicly available EPA database that contains information on toxic chemical releases and waste management activities reported annually by certain industries as well as federal facilities. For more information on TRI, EPCRA’s primary purpose is to inform communities and citizens of chemical hazards in their areas. Sections 311 and 312 of EPCRA require businesses to report the locations and quantities of chemicals stored on-site to state and local governments in order to help communities prepare to respond to chemical spills and similar emergencies. EPCRA Section 313 requires EPA and the States to annually collect data on releases and transfers of certain toxic chemicals from industrial facilities, and make the data available to the public in the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI). In 1990 Congress passed the Pollution Prevention Act which required that additional data on waste management and source reduction activities be reported under TRI. The goal of TRI is to empower citizens, through information, to hold companies and local governments accountable in terms of how toxic chemicals are managed.

a source of ideas that we could look  at to create useful maps
a source of ideas that we could look at to create useful maps
some shape maps from the TRI that that could be apart of our maps
looks like a good source for maps that may be able to aid us in our project
US Geodata
many potential data source ideas and information that can help us create our own maps
